Limitando los regalos: carta a los Reyes ✿ Limiting gifts: letter to Santa

Llegadas estas fechas muchos niños del mundo escriben una carta pidiendo sus regalos de Navidad. En Venezuela los regalos los trae el Niño Jesús, aquí en España son los Reyes Magos, en otros sitios es Papá Noel, Santa Claus o San Nicolás.  El caso es que sea quien sea el personaje que trae los regalos, los más pequeños se ponen a pedir y la cosa se nos puede ir de las manos si no les damos una guía para que la lista no incluya media juguetería.

When Christmas arrives many children around the world write a letter asking for presents. In Venezuela gifts are brought by Baby Jesus, here in Spain by the Three Wise Men, and in other places by Papa Nöel, Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas. But the common thing everywhere is that children can ask for half a toy store if we don't guide them through the process.

Desde que David tiene edad para hacer sus peticiones nosotros queremos que se enfoque en lo que consideramos el verdadero sentido de la Navidad: DAR. Adicionalmente, nos pareció necesaria una forma de limitar los regalos que pide, porque (aparte de que no somos millonarios) no queremos que se convierta en un pequeños tirano consumista, de esos que solo quieren cosas costosas y para cuando cumplen 6 años son imposibles de complacer.

Since David started to write his letters, we wanted him to focus in what we consider the true meaning of Christmas: GIVING.  Also, we thought it was necessary to limit the number of gifts he asks for because (apart from us not being millionaires) we don't want him to become one of those little consumerism oriented tyrants that only want expensive things and by the age of six are impossible to please.

Por último, desde la primera vez le explicamos a David que los Reyes no tienen obligación de traer toda la lista de regalos. Traen lo que pueden.

Finally, since the first time we explained him that the Wise Men or Baby Jesus or Santa aren't obliged to bring everything on the list. They give you what they can.

Con todas estas ideas y algunas que nos dieron nuestros amigos, diseñamos nuestra carta a los Reyes con cinco categorías y sólo se puede pedir una cosa en cada una de ellas:

• Algo que Quiero
• Algo que Necesito
• Algo para Llevar puesto
• Algo para Leer 
• y lo más importante: algo para Dar

Sí, en su lista, además de juguetes, tiene que pensar en lo que necesita (el año pasado fue una bici más grande, porque la que tenía ya le quedaba muy pequeña ☺) en ropa, en libros y en algo que no sea para él, sino para dárselo a alguien más. Los dos últimos años ha pedido cosas para su primo, que los Reyes le han dejado en nuestra casa y el momento de darle ese regalo ha sido uno de los más emocionantes para él.  ♥

With all these ideas and some more given by our friends, we designed our letter with five categories, and you can ask for only one thing for each of them:

• Something I Want
• Something I Need
• Something to Wear
• Something to Read
• and the most important thing: something to Give

Yes, in addition to toys, he has to think about what he need (last year it was a bigger bike because he'd grown so much ☺), clothes, books and in something that is not for him, but to give to someone else.  The last two years he asked for things to give to his cousin. The Wise Men left them in our house and giving those presents to his cousin has been one of the most exciting moments for him.

 Hasta ahora este modelo nos ha funcionado de maravilla y David recibe con mucha alegría sus regalos como lo que son: un privilegio y una bendición.
